Join guest speaker Niels Eichhorn, co-author of the book The Civil War in the Age of Nationalism for a free talk at Ulysses Grant National Historic Site. The American Civil War was one of many conflicts over national unification, secession, and independence that took place around the world from the 1840s to the 1870s. Many of the American war’s key issues – including nationalism, slavery and emancipation, the development of the liberal state, and the impact of industrialization upon warfare – were replicated abroad. The same is true of issues such as the role of religion, realpolitik, and imperialism, to say nothing of memory.

As a military leader, Ulysses S. Grant was fundamental in bringing about the victory of the United States in the American Civil War. The conflict was one of a series of mid-19th century wars that paved the way for modern warfare and the emergence of national identities. At the same time, politically, Grant and the Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck viewed the world in similar terms, worrying about the future well-being of their respective nation states. This talk will use the relationship between Grant and Bismarck to demonstrate the deeply interconnected nature of the 19th century world.
