For this Story Time, we will be honoring and recognizing our Native Veterans, specifically Code Talkers. Sources will be pulled directly from our own Indigenous Wisdom Curriculum Project, identifying the wide variety of tribal affiliations of the Code Talkers from WWI and WWII.

We will be featuring the award-winning book Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code: A Navajo Code Talker’s Story by Joseph Bruchac (Abenaki) and illustrated by Liz Amini-Holmes. This is the true story of Chester Nez, a boy told to give up his Navajo roots. He became a man who used his native language to help America to victory during WWII.

For our craft, we will be making eagles and a thank you poster to honor all past and present service members and their families.

Mozart Symphony No. 29
Vivaldi The Four Seasons

What finer time than the fall to revisit Antonio Vivaldi’s all-time most loved work, The Four Seasons. With the excitement of spring, the storms of summer, autumn’s harvests, and the chill of winter … Vivaldi encompassed an entire year’s worth of life into four miniature concertos. Also on the program is Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, written by the prodigious 18-year-old composer who was just finishing a busy two-year period focused on symphonic writing. Experience the youthful Viennese flavor of this great work.

For this event we will be featuring two books: The Circle of Thanks: Native American Poems and Songs of Thanksgiving by Joseph Bruchac (Abenaki) with pictures by Murv Jacob (Cherokee), and Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story by Danielle Greendeer (Mashpee Wampanoag), Anthony Perry (Chickasaw), Alexis Bunten (Aleut/Yup’ik), illustrated by Gary Meeches, Sr. (Anishinaabe).

The Circle of Thanks book features poems with themes of thanksgiving and appreciation of nature, based in part on traditional Native songs and prayers.

Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story is an important picture book that tells the Thanksgiving story from the perspective of the Wampanoag people; two kids from the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe learn the story of Weeâchumun’s (corn) and the “first” Thanksgiving.

Our reader will be Jeremy Felipe, from the pueblos of Acoma (Áakʼu) and Jemez (Walatowa)

For our craft, we will be creating Gratitude wreaths.
