Please join us, as former Bay Area artist and award winning floral designer, Phyllis Brady,  shares her insights, with a talk and and demonstration, on designing the flowers, for the San Francisco’s, de Young Museum’s, annual “Bouquets to Art”, exhibit.  With a combination, of a BA in fine arts, and 24 years with her floral company “Twigs & Ivy”, she participated in 8 years, as an invited floral designer, with the museums, most beloved tradition, and largest attended exhibit, now in its 39th year.

Using a palette of fresh flowers, and inspired by the museums galleries, the week long display of floral displays will offer new ways of seeing the permanent collection.  Inside the rotunda, a spectacular  two story floral chandelier, with over 10,000 floral stems, assembled with 30-40 volunteers, requiring a 2 day setup, will be colorfully viewed. Floral walls will be found throughout the museum.  There will also be a blind tour for the “Bouquets to Art”. 

The Sacramento Fine Arts Center, is excited, too be hosting, a bus trip, to see the “Bouquets to Art" exhibit, taking place in June.  Tickets available in late April, are expected to go fast.   With crowds anticipated, the art center, is planning to attend early in the week, to see the flowers at their freshest.

A discussion on the, behind the scenes, with this exhibit, starting with the audition process, to the selection of art works, when the museum is closed to the public, and opened only to the designers, to give a wish list, of 5 works of art, that inspire their designs.  Weeks later, an envelope will arrive, addressed to the floral designer,  containing the name of the art work and artist, that has been selected for their exhibit. Now the hard work begins.

During the demo, the flowers last the longest, and why, will be shown.   Using a wire dress form, the mechanics of the prop, that are crucial to keeping the flowers at their peak, will be demonstrated. This wire dress form design ( similar to the one featured in a past exhibit), will be used to create a composition from weaving, and clustering, the flowers, branches, stems and leaves, to make a delicate floral sculpture.

And, lastly as the, cold early morning setup day begins, in the parking garage, a line forms, with nervous florists having their carts filled to the brim.  They wait, for the curators, walking around, wearing white lab coats, inspect all fresh flowers, materials and containers, before entry into the museum, is permitted.

By 2PM, all floral displays must be completed, so that maintenance can clean up, the temperatures lowered, and the lighting crews, can begin, to set the galleries.  Soon the grand Gala, taking place that night, will start.  For 7 days, the exhibit will run and be seen, approximately 50-60,000 visitors.    Takedown begins, after the last hour, of the last day, when the same florists, once again lineup, in the garage, and wait, for when a flurry begins.
