7th Annual JCTC Scavenger Hunt

Put on your detective caps and come out to the Jefferson County Trails system for the 2021 Jefferson County Trails Council Scavenger Hunt.  The Jefferson County Trails system will play host to this all-ages event from May 29 to July 2, 2021.

Participants will collect clues at 10 locations along the trail to be entered in a drawing for prizes including: The Ride: Bike Sales and Service bicycle light kit and tee-shirt, Cider House 1949 gift certificate, and the At Home Store gift certificate.  Drawings for prizes will take place via Facebook Live the evening of July 2 during Fairfield First Fridays (or during live during the event depending on current virus status).

Carnegie Historical Museum - 4th of July Poster Contest

Carnegie Historical Museum
To honor the 4th of July, the museum is hosting a patriotic poster contest! Three age groups may enter the contest. All contest participants will receive a free Carnegie Historical Museum tshirt! Poster board may be picked up at the museum on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, from 1pm - 4pm. Poster board may also be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office Monday through Friday, from 9am - 5pm. Winners in each of the three categories will receive Chamber Bucks!

Father's Day

Father's Day in the United States is on the third Sunday of June. It celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. Its origins may lie in a memorial service held for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907.

This event is free and open to the general public. The activity’s emphasis is on learning social skills, literacy, art and play. Story Time will take place outdoors in front of the library. We ask that children's caregivers please remain present during story time.

Fairfield Municipal Band - 32nd Season

The 32nd season of the Fairfield Municipal band is starting next week. It is made up of 42 members ranging in age from high school juniors to septuagenarians. Many of our members have been playing since the band started in 1989. The concert dates are on Tuesday including June 15th, 22nd and 29th along with July 13th, 20th and 27th. No concert takes place on July 6th. Performances are at Central Park from 8 until 9PM.

Youth Paddle

Hit the water as we explore the Des Moines River from Bentonsport to Bonaparte. This program is geared for Van Buren County youth who are entering 5th grade or older. Participants must have an adult with them. This nearly four-mile stretch is a great introduction to river paddling. The cost for the program is $5 per kayak.

This is an official Des Moines River Water Trails event cosponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Jefferson County Conservation. The Des Moines River Water Trail is one of 19 official water trails in Iowa.

Full Moon Float

Paddle under the light of the Full Moon! Naturalist Brittney Tiller will lead participants out on the water as she interprets the various constellations and objects of the sky from the calm waters of the lake. The paddle will begin and end at the boat ramp on the lake. The paddle is open to everyone, however children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Paddle registration is limited to 20 boats. Jefferson County Conservation has several kayaks which participants may pre-register to borrow.

The Home Front: Why an Internationalist Foreign Policy Needs a Stronger Domestic Foundation is a 10-page article in the latest Foreign Affairs Magazine and the focus of today's discussion. The authors are Charles A. Kupchan and Peter L. Trubowitz. Kupchan is a Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, Professor of International Affairs in the School of Foreign Service and the Government Department at Georgetown University, and the author of Isolationism: A History of America's Efforts to Shield Itself from the World. He served on the National Security Council during the Obama administration. Trubowitz is Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House. He is the author of Politics and Strategy: Partisan Ambition and American Statecraft.

Colonies in Bloom - Amana Colonies, Amana, IA

“Colonies in Bloom” features the Amana Colonies bathed in flowers.  This summer-long event in the seven villages has two very special days; June 26th and July 24th, when selected private gardens, will be open to the public.  The garden display changes throughout the summer as each flower reaches its peak. Private gardens that are open will display both an American and German flag in their yard and the gardeners will be on hand to explain their specific yard and plants.  Stop by the Amana Visitor Center or any of our businesses to pick-up a map of the gardens and best flower displays.

Kayak Loan: Van Buren County

Enjoy a calm evening on the water at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park. Participants can kayak around the lake during one of two 45-minute sessions. Sessions will run from 5:30-6:15pm then again from 6:30-7:15pm and will each have 12 participants. Participants 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Staff will provide boats, paddles, and life jackets-which are required to be worn at all times during the program.

Lover's Leap Swinging Bridge - Columbus Junction, IA

Lover's Leap Swinging Bridge - 

A warning to the weak-kneed: This narrow bridge does its swinging eight stories high. 

IN 1920, BROTHERS LEW AND Jesse Tisor were walking over the pedestrian bridge at Lovers Leap ravine. The two teenagers would have been used to the sway of the wooden walkway, but this time the planks gave out from under them. In a flash they were at the bottom, miraculously unscathed, still standing upright.

Forgotten Villages Geocaching

The Van Buren County Historic Preservation Commission has located 38 "forgotten" Van Buren County settlements and commemorated each with a plaque marker. Each plaque has historical facts on it about the Forgotten Village it marks.

Want to add some additional excitement to your Forgotten Village quest? There are now a series of 36 geocaches that coincide with the Forgotten Villages. The map and brochure are available at the Welcome Center and online.

Maquoketa Caves Adventure

Explore one of Iowa’s hidden gems! Participants will travel to Maquoketa Caves State Park for a day of spelunking. Hike, climb, and crawl through features of the park such as ‘Dancehall Cave’, ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’, & ‘Ice Cave’. Participants will need a change of clothes and a sack lunch. Camp will be limited to ten participants. Pre-registration is required. Camp is designed for participants entering 7th-9th Grade and has a registration cost of $40. Participants will meet at Jefferson County Park Nature Center before heading to Maquoketa Caves State Park.

Baby Story Time

Enjoy stories, songs, finger plays and more with Youth Services Librarian Alecs Mickunas every Tuesday morning at 10:15 AM for Baby Storytime online with Zoom. Stories and activities will be selected for children age 4 and under but children of all ages are welcome to attend. This event is free and open to the general public. Please log-on 5 minutes early to ensure sound and video are working properly. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Geology Rocks

Turn your child into a geologist for the week! This camp will focus on rocks, fossils, plate tectonics, and the rock cycle. The final day of camp will include a surprise fieldtrip. Camp features nature exploration, hiking, games, crafts, and other hands on activities. Included in the $45 registration fee are snacks and a t-shirt. Camp will be limited to twelve participants who are entering 4th-5th grade.

SPROUTING UP SCIENCE

ISU Extension and Outreach
Roll up your sleeves and learn how science impacts our environment and health through plants! Learn how you can help plants grow and produce your own food at home. Prepare new recipes with foods that fuel our bodies, and get your heart beating with active lessons. Grades k-2nd. Registration deadline July 20th. Actual event date July 29th.

Good Night Story Time

Join Youth Services Librarian Alecs Mickunas every Tuesday evening at 5:15 PM for Good Night Story Time. Stories will be selected for preschool-age children through children in early literacy. This event is free and open to the general public. The activity’s emphasis is on learning social skills, literacy, art and play. Story Time will take place outdoors in front of the library. We ask that children's caregivers please remain present during story time.

Fairfield Municipal Band - 32nd Season

The 32nd season of the Fairfield Municipal band is starting next week. It is made up of 42 members ranging in age from high school juniors to septuagenarians. Many of our members have been playing since the band started in 1989. The concert dates are on Tuesday including June 15th, 22nd and 29th along with July 13th, 20th and 27th. No concert takes place on July 6th. Performances are at Central Park from 8 until 9PM.
