Let us renew our covenant with those who lived before us and celebrate our shared humanity.
Sponsored by City of Leander in partnership with Mayor’s Ad Hoc Committee

About this event

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/leander-legacy-honoring-aptzai-pil-symposium-tickets-652334268357

PLEASE NOTE: All attendees are required to show their photo I.D. upon entering the ACC-San Gabriel campus.

The symposium will open with introductions and a proclamation from Leander Mayor Christine DeLisle and will consist of presentations and performances, including a lecture by Dr. Mario Garza of the Indigenous Cultures Institute on the topic of repatriation and a film viewing of The Legend of the Bluebonnet, followed by a Q&A. In addition, contemporary Coahuiltecan artist-activist group Xasal Manām Collective will share through poetry, song, and storytelling. There will be organizations at booths, ready to answer questions and share resources on topics relating to the Indigenous and Native American history of the Leander and Central Texas area; equity and social justice; and environmental issues.

Purpose

The purpose of our symposium is to

• Celebrate the rich Indigenous history of Central Texas

• Raise consciousness and awareness of Aptzāi Pil’, Native American culture, and repatriation

• Build community through the collaborative efforts of educational institutions, civic and philanthropic organizations, and local government

• Bring about healing through Indigenous perspectives and understanding

• Provide opportunities for learning and entertainment for all who participate

Aptzāi Pil’, Ancient One

In December 1982, the 10,000 to 13,000-year-old remains of a Paleo-Indian female were discovered in the vicinity of Leander/Cedar Park and unearthed. For decades, the woman was referred to as “Leanne” or “Leanderthal Lady.” We now realize that using a colonized name is difficult for many to hear. Through consultation with the Indigenous Cultures Institute, we encourage all to use the Indigenous name, Aptzāi Pil’, which means Ancient One in the Coahuiltecan language.

Repatriation

From 1982 to the present, the remains of Aptzāi Pil’ have been in the possession of the Texas Archaeological Research Laboratory (TARL) in Austin. NAGPRA, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, requires TARL to return Aptzāi Pil’ to her lineal descendants or Indian Tribe.

Certificate of Participation / Credit

If you are an Educator, Civil Servant, Student, or Scout, you may be eligible to earn CPEs, assignment extra credit, or points towards your Scouts BSA Indian Lore merit badge by attending and participating in Leander Legacy: Honoring Aptzāi Pil’. It is recommended that you confirm in advance with your employer, teacher, professor, or merit badge counselor what specifically is required of you in order to be awarded those CPEs, assignment extra credit, or merit badge points.

Upon request, a digital certificate of participation will be sent to in-person attendees who provide their email address. If possible, please make this request when you register to attend.

For questions regarding certificates of participation or credit, please email HonoringAptzaiPil@gmail.com

Accessibility and Accommodations

What accommodations do you need to ensure that your participation is comfortable and successful? Please send your comments and requests regarding accessibility and accommodations to HonoringAptzaiPil@gmail.com

Speakers:

María F. Rocha is a member of the Miakan-Garza Band of the Coahuiltecan people, a state-legislature-recognized tribe of Texas, and is representing Indigenous Cultures Institute as a member of the Board of Elders. From 2016 until 2022, she served as the executive director of the Institute, which produces cultural initiatives such as the annual Sacred Springs Powwow, Indigenous Arts Summer Encounter, Repatriation (of ancient Native remains), and several other programs that preserve Native American culture. Rocha is a co-playwright of a play for young audiences, “Yana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet” and is currently writing a children’s book on the Coahuiltecan creation story and a second play about repatriation, “Pa Pakō – The Journey.” She lives in San Marcos, Texas.
