After a short Madison Land Trust business meeting, John Himmelman will present:
“Discovering Moths: Nighttime Jewels in Your Own Backyard”
Meet the beautiful, fascinating, and underappreciated cousins of the butterflies...
Chances are that hundreds of species of moths live just outside your door.  Moths show an amazing variety of color, shape, and behavior, but since most (though by no means all) of them are active at night, we often simply overlook them.  Learn about moths' intricate life cycle, their importance in nature, and how just a handful of the world's moth species are truly pests to humans. Discover how to attract moths with light and sugar bait, when and where to observe them, how to raise and photograph these beneficial species with whom we share our yards.

John Himmelman is an award-winning author, illustrator, naturalist and nature advocate. A cofounder of the Connecticut Butterfly Association, and past president of the New Haven Bird Club, the Nature Connection and the Killingworth Land Trust, John has lectured and led field trips throughout the country.  "My interest in moths probably evolved along with my tendency to stay up at night," he says.  "The fact that I could find hundreds of different kinds in my own yard, and that I find their form, function, and beauty a marvel, helped make them an obsession." A selection of John’s books will be available for purchase and signing after his talk.

CELEBRATE MADISON’S AGE OF ART & PROSPERITY AT OPEN HOUSE

The Madison Historical Society will celebrate the town’s Age of Art and Prosperity of the late 1800s at an Open House at the Allis-Bushnell House Museum, 853 Boston Post Road, Madison, on Saturday, November 25, from 11 am to 3 pm.  Visitors are welcome to explore the house and learn more about Madison’s history, free of charge, when the Historical Society opens its doors on Small Business Saturday.

Each room of the 1785 Allis-Bushnell House has a theme and tells a unique story about a specific period in Madison’s past.  This year, the Federal Dining Room has been reimagined to celebrate a period in the 1800s, when the country enjoyed economic growth for the wealthy as well as unprecedented innovation in science and industry. Artworks by Clarissa Munger Badger, her sister Caroline Munger Washburn, and their brother, George Munger, will be displayed. Also on display will be artifacts relating to the father-and-son team of George Munger and George Munger II, founders of Madison’s crayon factory, which became nationally recognized for the invention of dustless chalk.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about Cornelius Bushnell. Born in the house in 1829, he was instrumental in changing the course of naval warfare, as the financier of the ironclad battleship, the USS Monitor. During the age of sail, Bushnell left home at the age of fifteen to pursue a career as a merchant mariner. After five years at sea, he returned to New Haven to run a marine hardware store with his brother. An entrepreneur at heart, Bushnell later went on to become a railroad executive. In this role, he traveled to Washington, D. C., where he successfully lobbied politicians for protections for his small railroad. His effective lobbying skills–a form of storytelling–were noticed by members of the Lincoln administration. They enlisted his help to rally congressional support for the construction of ironclad ships--and the rest of Cornelius’s efforts made history.
