Public Hearing on Evergy’s proposed gas plants, solar facility to be held March 5
The Kansas Corporation Commission has scheduled a virtual public hearing beginning at 6 p.m. on March 5th to provide Evergy Kansas customers across the state with information about three proposed new generation investments (two combined cycle gas-fired generating turbine plants and one solar facility). One gas plant would be located near Evergy’s Viola Substation in Sumner County and the second near Hutchinson in Reno County. The Kansas Sky solar facility would be located in Douglas County. The Commission will also provide an opportunity for public comments during the hearing.
Evergy filed an application with the KCC requesting a predetermination of the prudency of the investments, if they will result in just and reasonable rates for customers, and whether Evergy would be entitled to recover the costs of the investments and under what terms. The company has asked to recover the cost of construction work in progress (CWIP) and in a future rate proceeding will ask for recovery of the investments after they are in service, which is expected at the end of 2026 for the solar facility and 2029 and 2030 for the gas plants. The Public Notice contains additional information on the application and potential rate impacts (see link below).
To participate in the virtual hearing via Zoom and make a public comment, advance registration is required by noon on March 4. For persons wishing to watch, but not comment during the public hearing, a live video stream will be available on the KCC YouTube channel. The hearing will also be recorded for later viewing. Written public comments will accepted through 5 p.m. on April 7.

Come join us to learn how we keep the shelter running as smoothly as it does! We are scheduling these monthly orientation and training sessions to help introduce individuals and families that would like to help the shelter by walking dogs, feeding shifts, cleaning shift, or just giving some time in their day to help socialize the animals. This orientation gives you the in depth information you need to help us as a volunteer up at the shelter. We understand that time might be tight, which is why we created this event to help you decide how you might want to help, and which shifts might be best for you! We have so many different things that we do up there that are always needing another set of hands to help with! This week it's cleaning up the yard and making it look welcoming to visitors, next week it might be pulling out and steam cleaning all the cat trees. There's always something up here to do, and when we're finished, there's always loving on the pets as well! Please consider joining us. Make sure you register on VMIS, please search in opportunities under Stray Facility Volunteer and then apply. Once you RSVP, please reach out to us to give us your name, and we'll have a few simple questions for you!
We look forward to meeting you all!

Presentation Topic: Western University was an educational institution that trained and educated predominately African American students in Quindaro, Kansas, from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Quindaro is located approximately 30 miles south east of Fort Leavenworth.
This presentation examines the university’s contributions to the U.S. Army from 1917 to 1918 during World War I. The examination includes a brief synopsis of the origins of Western University, its educational contributions to the local community before the war, the U.S. Government vocational training program, the U.S. Army’s involvement in the vocational program, the impact of the war on civilian students on Western’s campus, and finally Western’s significant contribution to the war effort through its involvement in the vocational program. This examination will support Western University’s little-known claim to the Governor of Kansas in 1918 that it was one of the best educational institutions in the nation not only for its academic achievements but also for its simultaneous contribution to victory training U.S. Army soldiers in its vocational training program.
About the speaker:
Bernard Harris, Ph.D., is an adult education historian serving as an Instructional Systems Specialist (Quality Assurance) at the Center for Army Leadership (CAL) at Fort Leavenworth. His dissertation reflects his research interests in adult education and history titled The Education and Training of Seven African American U.S. Army Officers for World War I and its Aftermath. Additional examples of his work can be found in the Ethnic and Racial Minorities in the U.S. Military: An Encyclopedia; a co-authored book titled Savannah 1779; and in adult education articles focused on flipped classrooms, accreditation, and assessments, published by the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL). He also wrote the article “Jim Crow in Kansas: African American Life during the Era of Segregation” published in A Journal of the Central Plains (Volume 45, Number 2 | Summer 2022). His most recent work is a co-authored article, “Leader Presence and Its Impact on Organizational Climate” in the Journal of Military Learning, Army University Press (2023) and a Leader Up podcast about the same article.
