MAINE STORIES
October 4 to November 16, 2024
Opening Reception Friday, Oct 4, 5-8pm
We are pleased to invite you to Maine Stories, an exhibition celebrating the inspiration of Maine's rich landscape that has captivated generations of artists for over 100 years. From its rugged coastline to historic harbors, lobster boats, sailing yachts, and iconic lighthouses, Maine’s wild beauty continues to inspire. This show holds special significance for me personally, as Maine’s artistic heritage runs deep in my family. These talented artists offer their distinctive interpretations, with many living in Maine year-round and exhibiting here for the first time. The Opening Reception is Friday, October 4, 5 to 8 pm. Join us for hors d'oeuvres and meet the artists.
Participating artists are: Thomas Adkins, Del-Bourree Bach, Paul Beebe, Kevin Beers, Zufar Bikbov, Ken DeWaard, Ralf Feyl, Tom Glover, Alison Hill, Neal Hughes, Tom Hughes, Eric Jacobsen, Jonathan McPhillips, Stan Moeller, Jeanne Rosier Smith and Carolyn Walton.
The Gallery is located at 679 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. The show continues through November 16. Hours are Tues-Sat 11-5 and any day by appointment. For more information please call 203 318-0616, email susanpowellfineart@gmail.com or visit our website at www.susanpowellfineart.com
The Madison Historical Society will resume its monthly History Happy Hour series on Friday, October 4, from 6 to 7 pm, at the Society’s historic Allis-Bushnell House at 853 Boston Post Road, Madison.
The first History Happy Hour of the season will feature MHS trustee and Madison Town Historian, Henry Griggs, in a presentation entitled “Madison in the Golden Age of Postcards.” Henry has been collecting postcards of Madison since 1998, when he received a framed collage of twelve cards as a housewarming gift. He now owns more than 800 different cards dating back to 1904. His talk will focus on Madison’s history from roughly 1905 to 1916, when the rise of leisure and travel and relaxed postal regulations combined with new printing technologies to create an environment in which hundreds of millions of hand-colored postcards were mailed annually. Henry’s PowerPoint presentation will feature a delightful array of representative examples from his collection.
Additional History Happy Hours of the 2024-2025 season are scheduled for November 8 in 2024 and February 14 and April 22 in 2025. Each event features a brief but fascinating presentation about Madison history, followed by a chance to socialize and enjoy beverages and hors d’oeuvres with fellow history buffs in the 1785 Allis-Bushnell House.

"The Quilters" is a 32-minute documentary, that follows the daily lives of several men inside the sewing room in a Level 5 maximum security prison in a small Missouri town. Audiences will come to know these men, witnessing their struggles, triumphs, and sense of pride as they create something beautiful in this windowless, sacred space, deep within the prison walls. Through this process and the relationships forged audiences will witness the power of art to restore an individual's view of themselves and others.
McShane, whose previous documentaries (Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops, Mothers of Bedford) have received critical acclaim, turns her lens toward these everyday artists with empathy and nuance.

In an act akin to civil disobedience, a group of women and their supporters organize their ordination to become Episcopal priests in 1974. The Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia welcomes them, but change is no small task. The women are harassed, threatened and banned from stepping on church property.
In this feature-length documentary film, we meet the women who challenge the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom and succeed in building a movement that transforms an age-old institution.
We invite you to remain after the screening with discussion with The Rev. Rachel Thomas, The Rev. Dr. Linda Spiers, and St. Andrew's Rector, The Rev. Shariya Molegoda.
