With the impact of the pandemic and some stores closed or partially open, more businesses are looking to bring their “shop” online. How do we protect ourselves and our companies against cyber criminals? We all know that we shouldn’t email our account information to someone claiming to be a Nigerian prince. We’ve heard the terms “spyware”, “ransomware”, “hacking”, “phishing”, etc. But, what do we need to know to avoid these things? How can non-technical people identify attacks and how should we respond? Join Zack Barton as he discusses the basics of cybersecurity and goes over some of the details that every computer user should understand to protect themselves and their businesses.

Building Community Through Wildfire
Quincy Firewise Welcomes Greg Kinne
Submitted by Sally McGowan

The Quincy Firewise meeting will be held Wednesday evening (March 22) at 5:00 pm at the West End Theatre inside Quintopia. This month we will hear from Greg Kinne about The Knolls an ongoing neighborhood safety and hazardous fuel reduction project involving 7 properties and over 50 acres along Quincy Junction Road near the Galeppi Ranch development. Our loyal attendees will recall Greg’s goal to form and coordinate neighborhood “pods” and to assist individuals who have an interest in leading or coordinating them. During this past year, Greg has earned certification as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist through the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), the same association that certifies Firewise communities throughout the country. Greg has taken what he has learned in the certification process and applied it to both his work on the land and in the ways he communicates his vision and earns the trust of property owners upon whose land he is working.

Greg’s slideshow presentation entitled The Knolls will include an overview of the relationship between Quincy Firewise Community and Plumas County Fire Safe Council and how their stated missions complement one another and support The Knolls project. Included in the presentation will be a summary of the project’s evolution and how the residents' involvement drove the momentum of the project. Greg will share with attendees how they can access these programs and resources in order to build a cadre of coordinators who lead similar projects in their neighborhoods. Some of the aspects of wildfire mitigation used in The Knolls project include identifying and implementing home hardening tasks, creating defensible space, thinning ladder fuels, pile burning and broadcast underburning, along with individual property planning.

Quincy Firewise is a local volunteer group making efforts to create a more fire- aware and fire-prepared community. We invite all Quincy residents, including those from surrounding areas and other Firewise Communities, to join us the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5-6 pm at the West End Theater inside Quintopia. In addition to monthly guest speakers, we provide up to date information on home/property insurance, evacuation preparedness, home hardening tips, and home ignition zone design.

When: Wednesday, March 22 from 5-6 pm (meetings are scheduled the 4th Wednesday of every month)
Where: West End Theatre inside of Quintopia

Pirates Past Noon KIDS is an adaptation of the fourth of Mary Pope Osborne’s award-winning fantasy adventure books from the Magic Tree House book series, which has sold more than 100 million copies and is available in more than a hundred countries around the world. This time around, Jack and Annie’s tree house takes them to an exotic island with pirates, where the two discover the power of friendship and the simple pleasures in everyday life.

Magic Tree House:

The two siblings return to visit the magic tree house on a dreary, rainy day. They find a book where the sun is shining and the waves are crashing, so they wish to travel to this tropical place. They realize that they are in the eighteenth-century Caribbean, the time of pirates! The siblings meet Captain Bones, a mean old pirate who captures the two and forces them to help him find buried treasure. It’s up to Jack and Annie to find their way back to the tree house and make their way home.
