Steve Grove is the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), the state’s primary workforce and economic development agency. Grove leads a 1400-person team that works to attract, grow, and retain businesses in the state. In addition, the department works on growing the state’s workforce, closing the opportunity gap, and providing businesses and startups the support they need to grow and thrive in Minnesota’s economy.
Before joining Governor Tim Walz’s cabinet, Grove spent 12 years as an executive at Google, most recently as the founding director of Google’s News Lab. Grove wrote for The Boston Globe and ABC News prior to joining Google. He has served as an advisor to the White House and State Department on counter-terrorism strategy. Grove also co-founded a nonprofit in 2014 called Silicon North Stars.
