Macon County Fair
The Macon County Fair, rooted in a rich history dating back to 1856, stands as one of the oldest and most celebrated county fairs in Illinois. Originally held on October 9-10, 1856, the fair quickly grew in prominence, featuring an amphitheater with a seating capacity of 5,000, as well as halls dedicated to farm products, mechanical and industrial exhibits, and fine arts. Additionally, the fairgrounds accommodated numerous livestock, with stalls for 500 cattle and pens for 500 hogs. From its early days at Fairview Park to hosting four state fairs in the 1860s, the Decatur-Macon County Fair established itself as a significant agricultural and community event.
Through the years, the fairgrounds have undergone various transformations and relocations. In 1903, the city of Decatur acquired the grounds, and subsequent expansions increased the park to its current 120 acres. The fairgrounds moved to different locations, including Fairlawn Park and a large tract northeast of Route 36 and Wyckles Road, before settling at the present site northwest of Decatur in 1954. Today, the fair boasts 50 acres of land, 18 buildings, and one of the state's premier half-mile racetracks. The City of Decatur eventually annexed the fairgrounds, continuing the legacy of this historic event that has been a staple of the community for over a century.
