My name is Lindsee Travis, owner of Best Teacher Supply, and I am proud to be running for Woman of the Year for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I, myself have a blood cancer.
On July 9
th, 2009 I received a call from my primary care physician that I will never forget. He gave me the news that I had a blood cancer. I went directly to the hospital where they performed my first of many bone marrow biopsies. They then told me after blood tests that I had Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). I had no idea what that meant and was scared that I wouldn’t be alive to see my daughters, who were 4 and 1 at the time, grow up. It is now 10 ½ years later and I am happy to say that I am in remission! This isn’t the end because after many bone marrow biopsies, so many blood tests and 2 different types of medicine funded by LLS, the blood cancer could still come back at any time. This is why I want to find a cure for blood cancer!
Blood cancers affect so many people and some do not have the outcome that I have. My goal for this campaign is to raise $100,000 for LLS to find a cure! LLS has contributed to 47 of 53 drugs that have been approved by the FDA. This is extremely awesome! Some drugs work for a while and then your body stops reacting to them and you have to change to a new one. This has happened to me. These treatments help me and many others live.
