January 2016

President's Corner

Hi Everyone!

If you did not attend last week's Speed Networking Luncheon, you made a HUGE mistake. 60 people were in attendance and met many new referral sources and received valuable information for their networking in the future.

The event was so successful everyone is looking forward to the next one, in April or May.  Watch this newsletter for details.

We offer congratulations and a fond farewell to our Assistant Director of Events Alexis on her Graduation from Grand Canyon University, and landing an exciting new job with StitchFix, an online subscription and personal shopping service.

We are sure she will climb the ladder to management in no time at all!  Alexis, you will be sorely missed and we wish you much success.

Jill and I have been invited to attend the United Community Action Network, (U.C.A.N.) Luncheon on Wednesday at the Peoria Police Station.  These luncheons are held for the purpose of discussing matters of concern in our community.

If you are a Peoria Business or  a Peoria Resident and have an issue you are concerned about that you would like us to present to the City of Peoria Police Department, please call or e-mail the Chamber office and tell us your concerns.

Mayor Cathy Carlat Announces Members of Citizens’ Charter Review Committee

Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat announces the Citizens' Charter Review Committee.  She has selected Terry Ellis, former City Manager of Peoria, to chair the Committee.

“Terry knows very well the importance of preserving Peoria’s history and core values while charting its course for the modern, vibrant city we are becoming,” said Carlat. “His leadership as City Manager was critical at a time in Peoria’s history when we were growing from a sleepy bedroom community into a city coming of age with its own identity and sense of place.”

“Over the past two decades, I’ve had the opportunity to watch Peoria mature into a Valley leader from the viewpoint of a civic servant and as a citizen,” said Ellis. “The strength of the representative government we have in Peoria is that the citizens are truly in the driver’s seat – so it only makes sense that citizens are the ones who will inspect the charter to see if it makes sense to modernize any of our city processes, and the citizens will have their say through a vote on anything that needs updated.”

Ellis served as Peoria’s City Manager from 1997 until his retirement in 2008. He remains a Peoria resident.

For more information about the Committee please contact the committee’s liaison, Tammy Shreeve, at 623.773.5143

Peoria Welcomes Huntington University

This week, Huntington University finalized an eight-year old lease for a new campus in Peoria, Arizona.  The former Dulce Salon and Spa building in the P83 District will be the new site of Huntington's digital arts degree programs.  The university expects to hold classes in the new location for the 2016 - 2017 school year.
"Huntington University is very excited not only to find a permanent location for our new site but also one that fits our digital media arts degree program so well," said Huntington's Director of Arizona Operations Jeff Berggren.  "Not only does the building look like a facility that houses a creative educational community it has fantastic visibility from both the 101 and 83rd Avenue."

The City worked to attract higher education partners as part of its Economic Development Implementation Strategy, a plan established to focus the long-term economic development efforts for Peoria by targeting certain industries that the City is primed to support.

"We are very happy to have Huntington University part of our community," said City Manager Carl Swenson.  "Peoria is always improving our economic positioning for workforce development and Huntington University, along with Trine University, play an enormous role in the attraction of targeted industries as a key objective in diversifying the City's economic base and workforce.
