Weekly Newsletter 7/7

July 2016

President's Corner

Will somebody please tell me, why are short weeks always weeks from %&$#?  I apologize for this week’s newsletter being a day late, between the holiday, our intern Kara moving to Denver and some of the staff sick, we could not get ahead of the game.  You’ll note my shout out below for some summer help – if you know anyone, we could sure use their talents.

Here’s hoping all of you enjoyed and wonderful 4th of July weekend with your family and friends. If you were outside, I sure hope it was in a pool!

I can’t tell you how delighted I was to hear all of the testimonials shared Tuesday morning at our networking breakfast.  We easily had 6 to 8 members talk about the fantastic service, exceptional products or the amazing employees they experienced while doing business with another Chamber member.  I was so impressed that as of this week’s newsletter, we will begin offering a Testimonials Corner for people to drop us a note about something that impressed them from another member's business.  Take a minute, drop us a note at marketing@peoriachamber.com and tell us about a member you’ve done business with.  You’ll see the spot in the right hand column below.

If you have a chance, take a minute and read the press release in the column to the right, from the Challenger Space Center. They need our help badly, please do whatever you can.

Last Thursday’s Women’s Networking Mixer at Cabin Whiskey at Park West Shopping Center was a FANTASTIC success!  Over 85 women attended, enjoying friendships, shopping, food and drinks. If you are a woman in business this is a group you really want to join.  Their next meeting is July 15th at the Chamber office.  Call Ruby for details 623-979-3601 or rrojas@peoriachamber.com.  Check out the Chamber Website for some great photos!

I think you will find next week’s luncheon speaker Pat McDermott very informative.  His topic “Rate Review: The Future of Energy in Arizona” will give you a good overview of what is happening with our energy now and what we can expect down the road.  Please join us, it will be worth your time.

If you have any comments or questions please do not hesitate to call me at 623-979-3601 or

 The Millennials Corner:
Why Everything You're Heard About Millennials is False

by Nikkie Byers

While it’s funny to share memes and videos about millennials and how God awful they are, it's wrong. It’s all wrong. The stereotype is that millennials are lazy, spoiled, and entitled to everything without hard work.

Challenger Letter

Below is a press release for Challenger Space Center.
While phrased beautifully, it does not describe the dire urgency of their need. If you, your employer or your friends believe in the wonderful educational programs
Challenger offers, they need your financial support right now. They are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit so all donations are tax deductible.

Their need is great and without our help, they will likely shut their doors. That would be a horrible end for an outstanding organization.  Please help if you can.
Thank You,
Guy Erickson
Peoria Chamber of Commerce

The Challenger Learning Center of AZ located in Peoria, AZ, is facing some difficult decisions within the next few weeks. Aging building equipment and rising energy costs have created a scenario that may cause the Center to close temporarily until sufficient funds can be generated to make needed repairs and fund the tough summer utility bills in the months ahead.

It would be tragic for the community if even temporarily close the building becomes necessary, having hosted more than 400,000 children in the state of AZ through various school programs and services as well as many thousands of visitors over the 16 years it has been in operation.

Parents and educators throughout the state have recognized the Challenger Learning Center as being a leader in educating children in the various aspects of STEM education. Children currently enjoying Summer STEM Camps ages K-8th grade are benefitting from the excellence in inspiring and exciting children to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math through various activities throughout the week of camp.

It is the hope of the Board of Directors and the Management of the Challenger Learning Center that the community will rally to support this non-profit that has touched the lives of many through their dedication to not only the preservation of the history of flight – but also their mission that was formed shortly after the disaster of the Challenger to honor those who were lost: “to inspire, educate and excite people of all ages.”

We would encourage community government and leaders to respond as quickly as possible so that there will be no interruption in services or programs. Donations can be made directly to: Challenger Learning Center, 21170 N. 83rd Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85382 or by calling (623) 322-2012.

Testimonials Corner

What a fantastic job Fresh Coat Painting has just completed on my home!  The crew was detailed and meticulous in their workmanship.  With the assistance of JT Trainor, we selected the right color and they did the rest.  I can’t say enough about the quality of their work.

Send us a testimonial on a Chamber member you've worked with and we'll highlight them!  Email a note to marketing@peoriachamber.com

Congratulations Huntington University!

Peoria to become the digital media capital of the Southwest

Examiner.com - For decades, Arizona was a top US movie-making site. Babyboomers remember classics like Psycho, Planet of the Apes, Gunfight at the OK Corral, White Christmas, or Waiting to Exhale. But legislative short-sightedness derailed Arizona’s attractiveness to filmmakers. While proposals to re-entice the industry are debated, the City of Peoria has found a different way to grow Arizona’s film industry. Peoria partnered with Huntington University to create the Arizona Center for Digital Media Arts, due to open this fall.
