November 2016

President's Corner

I want to start this week’s column by wishing all of you have very Happy Thanksgiving with your family and friends. As I look back on this past year with the Chamber I can honestly say I am very thankful to be in the position I am where I have a job I look forward to coming to every morning as I roll out of bed.

I’m very thankful to be working for the greatest Board of Directors anyone could possibly have. Their confidence in me is very gratifying, and more importantly, we have the same focus in trying to make the businesses in Peoria as strong as possible. Every decision we make is weighed by the question “is this best for our member businesses?” It is certainly much easier to get things accomplished when we are all working in unison.

Hard to believe it’s about to be December and we are rapidly looking at the next holiday.  I wish to remind all of you to please shop local for all your holiday gift purchases and party needs. By spending your dollars within the local community, you not only help support someone who has a family just like you but your sales tax goes right to the City of Peoria who works very hard to make this the best community possible to live and work in.

So, travel safe wherever you are headed and I hope you are as lucky as we are to have Friday off. Life is short and can change in a heartbeat, don’t miss a chance to tell someone how much they mean to you.

Have a great weekend!

Shop Local!

“Arizonans should recognize that where they spend their money has a much greater impact on their community and well being than they might expect,” said Kimber Lanning, Founder and Director of Local First Arizona (LFA). “Up to four times more money stays in the local economy when those dollars are spent with a local businesses rather than a national chain or global online retailer.”

Holiday Safety Tips

Thanksgiving Day is a time for family, fun and food. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, unfortunately, the number of residential fires on Thanksgiving Day is more than double the average number of fires on all other days. Here are some tips from the Peoria Fire-Medical Department to keep you safe on Thanksgiving.

• Have a fire extinguisher available not more than 10 feet from the stove, check to see if it is charged before the big day.
• Make sure your oven and cooking area are clean and free of grease before you start cooking. Keep flammable materials and decorations at least three feet away from the stove.
•  Keep the kitchen off-limits to children and cook on the back burners when possible.
•  Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.
•  Candles should never be left burning when you are away from home or asleep.
• Make sure you have working smoke alarms on all levels of your home
•  Make sure the turkey fryer is on level ground.
• Do not overfill the fryer with oil.
• A frozen or partially frozen turkey will cause oil to splatter - a small amount of cooking oil on a hot burner can cause a large fire.
•  Never leave hot oil unattended and keep fryer at least 30 feet away from structures, trees, or flammable materials.
