February 2017

President's Corner

In case you haven’t noticed, our “Chamber of Commerce Weather” has returned.  It took us a bit to pull off but we made it happen, so feel free to thank us at the next event you come to.

Last week’s Job Fair with Goodwill of Central and the City of Peoria was a major success.  We had over 80 attendees meeting with employers and each employer commented on how happy they were with the skills and qualifications of the applicants.  The Peoria Chamber is trying to hold these events quarterly so if you are hiring more people for your business, call our office and we will make sure you are on the employer’s list for our next event.

I had the pleasure of attending yesterday’s “Coffee with the Mayor” at WEMAR (Western Maricopa Association of Realtors).  Peoria Mayor Cathy was the featured speaker.  I have to say that I really enjoy listening to Mayor Carlat speak.  She gives direct answers to the questions asked and never adds the standard political jargon we hear continuously from most politicians.

The information she shared on the future plans for Peoria business and residents are exciting and they run the full distance from North to South.  Peoria is one of the fastest growing cities in Arizona and our Chamber is very proud to be a part of this well thought out plan.  A big thank you to our Mayor and City Council for the great job they are doing on all of our behalf.

Please note the change to our speaker/presenter at next Wednesday’s monthly luncheon.  Our planned presenter, The US Department of Labor, cancelled on us yesterday morning – “All federal agencies are currently on a ‘Continuing Resolution’ until April as Congress has not passed a budget for this fiscal year, therefore there are no funds available for outreach and travel”.

Thank you to Rosemary Rulka from R.C. Rulka HR Consulting for stepping in at the last minute to help end the confusion on Prop 206.  More info in the right-hand column.  This is a luncheon you will want to attend just to make sure you are compliant with all the new employment laws.

26th Edition of
The Millennials Corner:
The Do's and Dont's of Social Media
by Emma Wolff

As social networks grow, employers are turning to social media pages to learn more about a potential employee. A survey conducted by Jobvite in 2014 released a shocking statistic on how many employers really look at social media when making hiring decisions; their data showed that ninety-three percent of hiring managers will review a candidates social media before making the final hiring decision (time.com). Knowing potential employers are likely to search through cyberspace may give you the motivation to clean out unwanted information on your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and more!
