The Millennials Corner:

The Best Way to Create Loyal Customers

The guy who comes in for a cup of coffee and a donut every day at 3:00 pm. The girl who only will go to a certain auto-shop for her vehicle needs. The kid who will only eat McDonalds and no other fast food. What do we call these people?

These are loyal customers, the returners, the regulars. So how, as a business, do we create customers who will want to return or better yet, only choose our establishment? Here are a few ways to create a brand loyalty like no other.

First, product differentiation. Make your company different than competitors, whether it comes to your prices or your products. If you look exactly the same as the ice cream shop down the street, but with more expensive prices then say goodbye to your clientele.

However, if you have an expensive ice cream shop that specializes in a unique liquid nitrogen ice cream, then you will have a much larger clientele. Why...because it’s different! People will drive the extra mile to get your distinctive product; they will pay an extra few bucks for it, too. In a market economy, competition drives everything.

So you either have to have an amazing product or good prices in order to gain (and keep) customers that’ll choose your store over the nearest competitor.

Next, stay in contact with customers. This could be as simple as sending a thank-you note after a large purchase or a yearly “hope you’re doing well” card around the holidays. In my family we look forward to a simple Christmas card sent by our insurance guy every year.

A card, note, or email takes such little time and the return on investment is high! Not a lot of companies take that much consideration into their customers so by going the extra mile, that will help differentiate your company.

You can also send newsletters or email reminders to your clientele. This could be something quick to give your customers an update on what’s going on in the company, new offerings and special discounts. It will help keep the business top-of-mind for your customers.
