2021 Events Update

2021 EVENTS UPDATE

This year Covid has allowed us to explore the digital opportunities that Zoom has to offer as we have transitioned several of our event series to virtual. We will continue to use Zoom as we finish out 2020 for our weekly events: Coffee for Closers, Marketing Monday, Women 4 Women, and Percolate Peoria.

We have decided to take a pause in our monthly Networking Breakfast for the month of February.

We plan to re-engage our Networking Breakfast event as we move into 2021. We want to bring you prominent community leaders and create a space where you can network with one another as business leaders and mingle over breakfast. Until we know what 2021 will bring, we hope that you will continue to join us on Zoom weekly and take part in learning ways to increase sales, market your business, and interact with other Chamber Members.

Billy's Place Exciting Updates

I hope your year is off to a strong start. We're so fortunate at Billy's Place; because of amazing donors, volunteers, and champions (like you) we're full-speed into an impactful 2021!
Remember how we said an awesome friend of Billy's Place offered to match the donations we received in December, dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000?

Well, YOU did it! We received the entire match!

Our community showed up big time as we closed out 2020, and thanks to all of you, we have started 2021 stronger than ever. Here are just a few of the exciting developments we have made over the last month:

πŸ’œ Added family group nights each month.
πŸ’œ Expanded our space: we rented surrounding office space to continue our in-person meetings at safe distances.
πŸ’œ Extended our hours to make it easier for the growing number of families to reach us for help right away.
πŸ’œ Bolstered educational outreach to teachers, counselors, and school administrators.

Mark your calendar: the 8th annual Hike for Hope is set for April 17 at Copper Hills Church, near Sunrise Mountain.

Things will look a little different this year, but our spirit and purpose remain the same: to rally support for one another while honoring the loved ones who mean so much to us—always.

Instead of a single send-off time, this year's hike will be more of an open house. Teams will be able to come when it's convenient for them, which will enable spacing out attendance across the morning. This way, we won't all be gathering at once.

Not everything will look different, though. We're excited to include our favorite hike traditions:

🐴 Therapy animals
🎢 Music
🀹‍♀️ Fun activities for the whole family
🎫 Cool raffle items YOU could win
πŸ• Tasty food
🧘🏽‍♂️ Peaceful time in nature
πŸ’œ Memories of our loved ones

Check out the African Tribal Art at WVAM

In recognition of Black History Month, the West Valley Art Museum (WVAM) is presenting a unique exhibit, African Art in the Cycles of Life, featuring rare, unusual art works from the collection of Robert Glenn. The vast collection represents numerous tribes in many countries including Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria and Zaire to name a few. Glenn, a resident of the West Valley, acquired the items over many years, starting in 1989. The tribal art pieces are handcrafted and made primarily of wood, bronze or terra cotta. Such tribal art is almost never meant to beautify or decorate. It is used for tribal worship, rituals, magic and communicating with the super-natural. This exhibit opened on Jan. 19 and will continue on view, free to the public, through March 4. The WVAM Art Gallery is located on the first floor of Peoria City Hall at 8401 W. Monroe Street in Old Town Peoria. Masks are required. The gallery is open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.wvam.org or call 623-972-0635.

Can you help out Gompers?

Prior to COVID-19, Gompers served 500 students and adults with disabilities with a Private Day School, Adult Day Program (DTA) and Employment Services (ES) at locations in Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix. As we approach our 75th anniversary, our mission as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit continues to transform local lives for the better with unique programming and experiences.

On September 14, 2020, Gompers welcomed back 60+ adult members and 50 drivers and staff to Adult Day Program (DTA) at our Phoenix and Peoria locations after 5 months of virtual services. Employment Services offers group supported employment in partnership with 15 local businesses across the valley, from Peoria to Mesa. Our ability to re-open and stay open is largely due to our work with HealthyVerify. In collaboration, we developed a re-opening plan, staff training and health and safety protocols that are certified in accordance with all Federal, State and Local guidelines. These safety measures require us to operate program rooms at a reduced capacity of 45%.

In order to continue services for all the individuals we supported before building closure, Gompers needs additional space and is looking for opportunities to partner with local business that have unused space. Please contact mbotterbusch@gompers.org if you can help!
