Join the Plant a Tree Challenge
Throughout the months of March and April, the city of Peoria will be hosting a number of activities to celebrate both Earth and Arbor Days. To kick off the celebration, Peoria residents can participate in the Plant a Tree Challenge to help add forest and shade coverage to the community by encouraging desert tree planting from March 1 until Arbor Day on April 30. If you plant a tree during the challenge time period, upload the before and after photos of you planting the tree to Dropbox at http://ow.ly/HXT050DT04O. Each set of photos will be entered into the contest and winners will be randomly selected after April 30. Share Your Thoughts About Arts in Peoria
The city is encouraging the community to provide feedback and help shape the Arts Master Plan to coincide with the city’s newly adopted general plan. The current Arts Master Plan was adopted by council in 2009 and it helped establish the Percent for the Arts Fund, the Peoria Arts Commission, public art priorities and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. The new version of the master plan will focus on community engagement while positioning Peoria for the anticipated growth the city will see over the next decade. The new plan will assist the mayor and city council, the Peoria Arts Commission, and city staff in defining priorities and guiding decisions for the next 10 years. Residents can participate by taking the short survey and/or by joining a focus group. To take the survey or sign up for a focus group, visit www.peoriaazarts.com. The survey will be open until Friday, April 2.
City Looking for Donors to the Historical Society
The city of Peoria is attempting to locate the rightful owners of artifacts donated to the museum of the former Peoria Arizona Historical Society (PAHS). The PAHS has been dissolved and, as outlined by the bylaws of the society, the dissolution results in all assets being turned over to the city of Peoria. The city is seeking to return donated or loaned artifacts to the original owners or legal heirs, based on documentation found in PAHS records or proof of original ownership provided by claimants. Copies of donation or loan documents will help expedite the process. The deadline for parties to come forward with a claim for their items is May 20, 2021 at 5 p.m. For more information, contact Sharon Roberson, Peoria assistant to the city manager, at 623-773-7572 or sharon.roberson@peoriaaz.gov.
Hop Through Peoria's Easter Event
Hop through the city of Peoria’s free annual Easter event on Saturday, April 3 from 8 to 11:45 a.m. at the Peoria Sports Complex. This year, to accommodate COVID-19 safety protocols, participants must sign up for a time to venture through the Dolly Sanchez Cottontail Lane Grab and Go Event. Families can sign up for a time slot starting at 8 a.m. where they will move through the event to get candy, crafts, and trinkets, and take a picture with the Easter Bunny. To ensure physical distancing while providing goodies for the children, 125 people can sign up for each 15-minute time slot, allowing up to six people per registration. Prior to the walk down Cottontail Lane, there will be four staging areas inside the complex for families to get Easter Bunny photos. Every 15 minutes a new group will start moving through the event with the last time slot beginning at 11:45 a.m. Masks will be required and hand-sanitizing stations will be available throughout the complex. Admission and parking at the Peoria Sports Complex, located at 16101 N. 83rd Ave., is free. Registration is required to attend this event. To reserve a spot for the Dolly Sanchez Cottontail Lane Grab and Go Event, sign up online.
Check Out the Sustainable U Workshops
Sustainable University continues to host workshops through March and April. Tune into the next two workshops on March 27 and April 10. The Best Small Desert Trees is on Saturday, March 27 at 9 a.m. A tree that is too big for its location will eventually lead to the damage of surrounding sidewalks, neighbor disputes, and eventually the huge cost of removal. In this class, a certified arborist will go over small to moderate tree options that work with the desert climate, including photos, pros, cons, and tips on special care. On Saturday, April 10 at 9 a.m. is the Wildlife Friendly Landscapes workshop. Now more than ever the native wildlife needs help to continue to thrive in urban areas. You can help by turning your yard into a mini wildlife sanctuary. It is easy to create an inviting environment for birds, butterflies and other creatures using a wonderful array of native and desert adapted plants. For more information about Sustainable U, visit www.peoriaaz.gov/sustainability.
