United Express Flights Operated by SkyWest Airlines

“Now, with the new United Express flights operated by SkyWest Airlines, local travelers can conveniently connect to United’s global network, with daily flights between Prescott and Denver, and six days a week between Prescott and Los Angeles, with one roundtrip each day. This is a game-changer for our region. Now, it’s our turn to support this new air service in Prescott. Tickets are on sale now at united.com.”

Fly Prescott Regional Airport to LA or Denver Before December 31.
Help Us Reach 10,000 enplanements for 2018

The Prescott regional airport is reporting that enplanements continue to increase.  Most recent numbers show that planes flying to Los Angeles and Denver were, on average, nearly 80% filled.  This is great news for the airport and the City.
Here’s more good news:  The airport is on track for 10,000 enplanements by December 31 of this year.  What does this mean for the City and the Airport?  If we reach 10,000 enplanements, this will unlock $1 Million Dollars in Federal funds for upgrades and improvements at the airport.

These additional dollars will be used to make Prescott Regional Airport safer and more customer friendly.

How can you help?  Book a flight to LA or Denver this year.  Go for business, visit family, or just visit and see the sights.  Tickets are very reasonable, but they are going fast.  Book today at United.com, and help Prescott Regional airport get to 10,000 enplanements for 2018!

YRMC Health Connect

Autumn ranks as our country’s favorite season, but even it has its downside – namely, seasonal flu.

“People tend to minimize the flu,” said Sharon Lee, FNP-C, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, YRMC PhysicianCare Family and Internal Medicine in Prescott Valley. “The flu is more than a bad cold that keeps you down for a few days. It can be dangerous, especially for children and older adults.”

Who should get an annual flu vaccine? Everyone six months of age and older should be vaccinated. It’s particularly important for high-risk groups: adults 65 and older, people with asthma and diabetes, and pregnant women.

Each year, approximately 200,000 Americans are hospitalized for flu-related illness. Here are five tips to prevent the flu so you can pull on your favorite sweater and head outside to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.

1. Get the flu vaccine.
The flu virus is very contagious and can spread before you even have symptoms. While no one can predict when the flu season will peak, it takes about two weeks for antibodies to form after receiving the flu vaccine so getting your annual flu shot is important.

“The flu virus is most common during the fall and winter months, but it’s not unheard of for the season to stretch into May,” said Lee. “I recommend getting an annual flu shot when it’s available.”

The 2018-19 flu vaccine is available now. You can find a location to get vaccinated here.

2. Boost your immune system.
Your first line of defense against the flu is to keep yourself as healthy as possible. This means eating a balanced diet filled with fresh fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, getting plenty of sleep and practicing self-care to help eliminate stress.

3. Hydrate.
Drinking enough fluids may help defend against illness and assist in recovery if a cold or the flu comes knocking. Warm tea, soups and broths are soothing additions to your daily water intake and they will keep you well hydrated.

4. Keep your space clean.
Disinfecting common areas and frequently used items can kill cold and flu viruses potentially living on your phones, remotes or kitchen countertops. Disposable disinfectant wipes and paper towels are better to use than a sponge.

5. Stop the transfer of germs.
Our last, but definitely not least, flu prevention strategy is to use correct hand washing techniques and to understand how the flu virus is spread.

“The virus can enter the body through your eyes, nose and mouth,” Lee said. “Make a conscious effort to not touch those areas and encourage your children or grandchildren to do the same.”

When washing your hands, rub them together vigorously for 20 seconds using warm water and soap. Similarly, don’t share cups or utensils with others.

If you do come down with the flu, your healthcare provider may prescribe antivirals that can speed up the recovery process if taken within the first day or two of becoming sick. It’s also recommended you:

  • Stay home and avoid contact with others.
  • Wear a face mask or use a tissue to cover coughs and sneezes if you must leave home.
  • Wash your hands to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • Contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned about your symptoms, become very ill or are in a high-risk group.

What’s the good news about seasonal flu? It usually ends or weakens by spring, which is another favorite season.

To schedule an appointment with Sharon Lee, FNP-C, contact YRMC PhysicianCare Family and Internal Medicine in Prescott Valley at (928) 442-8710.

St. Luke's Community Christmas Dinner: Don't Spend Christmas Alone

BBB: Seasonal Job Scams

The holiday season is fast approaching and almost everyone could use a little extra money. The retail industry alone will hire more than half a million temporary workers this season, with hotels, restaurants and delivery services also likely to hire a significant number of seasonal employees.

Unfortunately, scammers may be hoping to take advantage of those looking for temporary work. In 2018, more than 1,250 employment scams were reported to BBB Scam Tracker, making them the second most prevalent type of scam according to the BBB Risk Index.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) encourages applicants to take the following steps when applying for seasonal job:

Start your research sooner rather than later. Employers begin screening candidates as early as October and as foot traffic increases in November and December, seasonal hiring grows.

Figure out which job is right for you. If an applicant is outgoing and embraces the holiday cheer, he or she may want to apply for customer representative jobs. If a candidate prefers to work on their own, they may look for inventory or fulfillment center jobs. BBB strongly recommends job seekers apply on the company’s website, as opposed to a third-party website.

Work where you shop. Employers may prefer applicants who know their products. If a job seeker shops at certain stores frequently, chances are he or she knows about the company’s culture and the merchandise they sell.

Be available and flexible. Hiring managers are drawn to candidates who have a flexible schedule and make themselves available. Be prepared as seasonal employees will likely find themselves working long, sometimes inconvenient hours, even on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Keep all options open. Job seekers should not confine themselves exclusively to large retailers and restaurants. Smaller businesses may also be looking for extra help during the holidays.

How to spot a job scam:

Job offers from strangers that are too good to be true. Be wary of jobs offered without an application or formal interview, especially if they promise high wages and the comfort of working from home. If it all sounds too good to be true, it very likely is!

Jobs that request up-front payments. If an employer asks a seasonal employee to pay advance fees for training, a background check or drug testing, that is a red flag. New hires should not have to pay money to start a job.

Overpayments. Fake employers will send the applicant a check as a hiring incentive or to cover expenses but “accidentally” send too much, only to ask the applicant to send a portion back via wire transfer. Though the check looks legitimate, it will bounce and the victim will lose the money wired and be charged bank fees for the bad check.

Vague company descriptions. Job hunters should be wary if they cannot identify the company’s contact information, owner, headquarters or even products. No one should rush to accept a job before verifying whether or not the employer is legitimate. Just because an ad is listed online does not mean the business is real. Check bbb.org and read customer reviews to verify the employer has a good rating.

Remember to always report scammers.  If a candidate has been the target of a scam, or suspects scam activity, it should be reported to authorities and the BBB Scam Tracker to warn others.
