Memorial Weekend Activities

Plumas Co. Veterans Services

MEMORIAL WEEKEND. A lot is going on this weekend for veterans and their families. First, the flags will be flying in recognition of Memorial Day. Quincy Girl Scout Troop 244 is volunteering to place American flags on veteran graves at two of the Quincy graveyards. The large American flags will be installed at the Cemetery Hill cemetery by Quincy VFW Post 3825.

Additionally, previously mentioned on May 28th the Quincy VFW Post 3825 is hosting the public a lunch/dinner in celebration of their 80th Anniversary. That event will be held at the Quincy Veterans Hall, 2745 Lawrence Street starting at noon and running to 6 PM. Pulled pork sandwiches, salads, soft drinks/water, and cake are on the menu. Stop by, eat, say hello, and compliment the Post for being a part of the community for 80 years and running.

On May 30th there will be a ceremony at Dame Shirley Plaza to observe the Memorial Day holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving in the US military. This is the 15th year the event has been hosted by local attorney Robert Zernich. The event is scheduled to start at 10 AM with seating for 30-40 so if you want to sit down get there early. After the event Plumas County Veteran Services is providing a free lunch to veterans and their families. Stop by the Veteran Services table and say hello. The office is asking all to focus on the veteran suicide problem and help an impacted veteran to connect to the wide-ranging services for those in need.

BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH WILDFIRE

Quincy Firewise is a local volunteer group making efforts to create a more fire aware and fire prepared community. Quincy Firewise invites all Quincy residents to engage with these efforts and attend our monthly Firewise gathering. This month we will hear more from our Quincy Firewise leads, Mike Flanigan and Richard Stockton, who will welcome all in attendance and provide Quincy Firewise updates. Greg Kinne, former contractor and active Plumas Underburn Cooperative member, will give a presentation on defensible space and home hardening. Greg will discuss the defensible zones, appropriate vegetation spacing and will take questions. Mike Flanigan will then review the Firewise reporting tool.  Lastly, there will be a prize raffle to win the well-reviewed RPM Beast Rake specifically designed to rake pine needles.

Quincy Firewise continues to meet monthly to provide guest speakers and share up to date information on home/property insurance, evacuation preparedness, home hardening, creating defensible space zones around homes and structures, pile burning tips and the Plumas Underburn Cooperative (PUC).

If you are passionate about building relationships with your peers while participating in collective actions to protect our community from wildfire, we welcome you to join us each month. We also encourage you to bring a friend and neighbor.

When: Meetings are scheduled the 4th Wednesday of every month from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Where: West End Theatre inside of Quintopia

Community Mural Project Complete!

Plumas Arts

The community mural project was the brain child of Plumas Arts Events Coordinator Jennifer Ready, who had completed similar projects at youth leadership conferences. After the Dixie Fire, Plumas Arts wanted a piece that represented the strength, hope, and resilience of our communities here in Plumas County.  Jennifer envisioned a project that everyone had a hand in creating.

Plumas Arts commissioned local muralist Trixie Hollyhox (aka Tina Thorman) to design our collaborative mural and help break the piece into about 200 separate pieces. Each person was given a small canvas board to paint with a specific design, which then got added to the mural board to create one large piece. The image begins to emerge as each of the painter's pieces were assembled together.

The mural was worked on at two separate Plumas Arts events. The first event in October 2021 in Quincy celebrating Plumas Arts' 40th Anniversary, and the second event, originally scheduled for mid-October 2021, but rescheduled for May 15 2022- Music on the Green in Greenville.

The collaborative- community mural  project shows how strong we are, TOGETHER, and brought hope and togetherness through art to communities devastated by the Dixie Fire.

The mural will be displayed at Evergreen Market in Greenville for several months starting in June. From there, the mural will move to several places around the county. Check back in for future locations.

A big THANK YOU to Hollyhox Painting for helping with this collaborative effort.

A Little History...

Edward Jones

As we celebrate our 100th anniversary this year, we’re reflecting on our history and values. In the latter half of the 20th century, Edward Jones Sr.’s son Ted Jones discovered an untapped market: rural towns. People in these towns needed to secure their financial futures but were often overlooked by city-based firms, so Ted embarked on a journey across Missouri, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma to serve local communities. Ted’s approach varied greatly from the one his father envisioned, but it emphasized the idea of financial inclusivity and set the stage for Edward Jones to grow into the firm it’s become today.
