A Short History of Black Cooperatives in America

Feather River Food Co-op

From mutual aid societies to independent fugitive communities and from farmer cooperatives to consumer co-ops, Professor Gordon Nembhard details how people work together in the face of racism and active sabotage to improve each others’ lives in tangible ways. Cooperation has proved a powerful tool against discrimination. In honor of the Black Lives Matter movement, we’ll survey a small part of the rich cooperative history that Gordon Nembhard chronicles.

While African Americans have utilized cooperation since the first Africans arrived as indentured servants in the early 17th century, the first recorded cooperative efforts were mutual aid societies in the late 18th century. Both free and enslaved Black people pooled money to pay for things like burials, land, helping the sick and the orphaned, and even buying freedom for one another. Early forms of cooperation ranged from mutual insurance companies to buying clubs to collective farming. The Underground Railroad is a famous example of cooperative effort.

SBTS 2022 Volunteers and Partners of the Year

Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship

In 2022, we had 592 volunteers join us on the trails and at our events, logging 4,290 hours, which equated to $128,485.50 in grant matching dollars.

To that end, we wanted to take a moment to recognize a few standouts that truly helped move the organization forward last year with their contributions, each in their own way.

  • Volunteer of the Year: Diane Zingarelli
  • Volunteer of the Year: Steve Minniear
  • Local Partner of The Year: Plumas Sierra County Fairgrounds
  • Regional Partner of the Year: Motorcycle Performance Center
  • Industry Partner of the Year: Cervélo

Want to get involved this year?

We’ve got a solid season of events lined up this year, and plenty of opportunities to have a shovel full of fun while helping to make dirt magic in the Lost Sierra. Mark your calendars for our three epics—weekend-long volunteer gatherings filled with trail work, BBQ and camping—or sign up to volunteer at the Lost & Found Gravel Festival or the Downieville Classic. Sign up for our newsletter to stay informed on upcoming events.
