T.E.A.M. 4 Travis (Together Ending Asplenia Mortality) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization started from every parent's worst nightmare, the sudden, unexplained death of their child. Travis was a perfectly healthy, happy and active 4-year old little boy. One night in August 2018, he developed a high fever. Despite receiving medical attention from 3 different providers, all diagnosed Travis's symptoms as the flu and sent him home. On Saturday afternoon, he died. It was only during the autopsy that the medical examiner determined the cause for Travis's sudden death. He was born with no spleen, a condition called Isolated Congenital Asplenia. With ICA, a child is immune-compromised and unable to fight certain bacterial infections.
It is our mission to prevent other families from losing a child to this rare genetic birth defect. We work to raise awareness about ICA, provide increased community and medical education, and ultimately contribute to research for better understanding of the disease and creation of a diagnostic tool or Newborn Screening to prevent ICA from being just the cause of death on a child's death certificate.
