Board Spotlight

Mike Snelson has been a part of the Springville business community for 45 years. He is the President  of Snelson PhotoColor Lab, a 47 year old Springville-born business. He has been a member of the  chamber board for over 10 years. Mike has enjoyed serving with some great people with talents for  making businesses grow.

Mike's current assignment on the chamber's board of directors is to serve as the liaison from the  Springville City Council. He also works with the education chairman, Luis Muzquiz, to find valuable  speakers for the lunch and learn activities.

Snelson PhotoColor Lab was created after a devastating fire in 1973 that took five businesses from  Main Street. Castleton's Photo was one of those businesses. Mike's father, Ralph was a math teacher at  the Jr.High and worked at Castleton's after school developing film and making prints. After the fire  Ralph and his wife Janet built Snelson PhotoColor Lab to serve the needs of professional portrait and  wedding photographers. After his mission in Finland for the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, Mike went to work for his father and together with the company's employees, helped build the business into a 36 employee business that served professional photographers across the country.

In 1991 Mike had a rude awakening. He was shown a massive computer that could manipulate digitized photos. He saw the writing on the wall. Embrace the new technology or die. Mike determined  then to embraced it and was an early adopter of digital in the photo lab industry. After years of background in digital techniques, when professional photographers began to embrace digital  photography Snelsons was prepared to serve and train.

Digital photography made it easy for entry into the photo industry.  Many people who would have other wise stayed away, all of a sudden became “professional photographers”. This trend decimated true  professional photographers' businesses and small photo labs around the country began to close.  Snelsons decided to diversify and now has a product lineup from photo printing to fine art  reproductions, slide, negative and print digitization, video tape and movie transfers to digital, canvas  and metal prints, and even customized tee shirts and hats!

Mike is an avid bicyclist riding on average 100 miles a week all year long,(a smart trainer helps). He is  also a competitive shooter in the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting, (yeah, look it up). He and his wife Jackie raised six children here in Springville and they have 20 grand kids.
