We had the opportunity of hearing from Carla Wiese, Springville City Economic Development Specialist/City Planner, during our August 9th TARGET Workshop.
Carla has many years of experience in the private sector. Most of her work in the private sector was with economic development and planning and coordinating and consulting with the smaller cities that didn't have planning and economic development. She also worked on general plans, ordinance rewrites, redevelopment, and other work in legislative advocacy and lobbying. The bulk of her experience came from working with the Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance, where she did economic development and land use policy for them for quite a few years. We were lucky that she saw the job opening for Springville and are glad to have her a part of Springville City and the chamber.
We had a great discussion. Carla wants to gather as much information as possible to help businesses in the community. They want to find out what companies are looking for from the city and how the city can help businesses. They want to know what they are doing well and what businesses want more information about.
Don't hesitate to reach out to Carla with any questions.
Carla talked about a couple of significant studies that are going on right now with planning projects. One is the main street corridor, reframing downtown. It takes in the Main Street corridor from 400 North to 800 South. It's not the whole expanse but a good chunk. A lot is going on on Main Street; it's a main thorofare, and they have to work with UDOT; there's also the historic downtown that needs to be livened and activated. The city is currently working with consultants out of Denver, Design Workshop. They've done so much work out of Utah and are familiar with the area. They were here earlier doing focus groups and will be back on August 22 at the Farmer's Market to do more general public outreach rather than specific focus groups.
It was great having Carla speak to the chamber about the many exciting things happening in the city. If you missed it and have any questions, feel free to reach out to Carla. We hope you can make it to our next education event in September. It will be a Lunch & Learn with Amelia Powers Gardner, Utah County Commission.
Every 2nd Tuesday of the month we meet at the lab at Springville Library for either a morning TARGET Workshop or our quarterly Lunch & Learns.
Our next meeting will be Lunch & Learn at noon with Amelia Gardner. RSVP HERE
