About City of Sylvester
Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County in Southwest Georgia. Its population is 6,188 and the municipal footprint covers 5.7 square miles. We are predominantly an agriculture economy, growing peanuts, cotton, corn, pecans and produce.We are often dubbed the Peanut Capital of the World due to our peanut production.
Agribusiness is Georgias leading industry. The states agribusiness as a whole contributes a $56.7 billion impact to the states economy and Sylvester and Worth County alone generate $125 million through agriculture-based business.
A long-standing Sylvester industry Con-Agra is the manufacturer of Peter Pan peanut butter. All the Peter Pan produced for domestic and international markets is made here in Sylvester. Consequently, Con-Agra is a major employer for the local workforce, along with the local school system and health services.
In May, 1922 South Georgia businessman J. N. Pidcock organized the Georgia Ashburn Sylvester and Camilla Railroad. This shortline was known informally by locals as the GAS Line. A 1930 GAS steam engine is on display today in Sylvester.
