Northlands Rescue Mission

Since 1942, Northlands Rescue Mission has been dedicated to serving the homeless and hurting in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Founded by Reverend Joseph V. Trankina during the midst of World War II, the mission was established as a response to the devastating effects of poverty in the community.

Rev. Trankina's personal experiences with loss and hardship fueled his passion for helping those in need. After losing both parents at a young age and experiencing a tragic accident that took the life of his niece, he found solace in his faith and felt called to Christian ministry. He pursued theological education and ultimately founded Northlands Rescue Mission with his wife Rae and their children after serving as missionaries on Indian Reservations.

The mission's primary focus has always been to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of its visitors. Rev. Trankina emphasized that the true founder of the Mission is Jesus Christ himself, who came to free the captives and bring hope to those in despair.

Throughout its history, Northlands Rescue Mission has remained committed to providing shelter, meals, and support services for individuals experiencing homelessness or facing other challenges. The dedicated staff and volunteers have worked tirelessly to offer assistance and intervention on behalf of those seeking help.

Today, Northlands Rescue Mission continues its vital work in Grand Forks, upholding its founding principles of compassion, service, and faith. With over 75 years of experience in serving the community, it remains a beacon of hope for those in need.
