About Claves Unidos
CLAVES UNIDOS presents dance productions and events that are life and community-affirming including a free African Roots Community Dance Class on Saturday mornings at Dogtown Dance Theatre at 9 am. It is a ‘kinetic tour’ of African-influenced dances ‘between the backyard and the Caribbean’.
The ‘clave’ or ‘key’ is the basic African rhythm found in many of the best-known forms of Latin American music. It came from Africa and, by way of Cuba, informed music throughout the world. All forms of music have an underlying rhythmic base. By acknowledging and celebrating the similarities and differences between those rhythms and the people behind them, we demonstrate how closely related we are no matter where we are from.
Through the CLAVES UNIDOS experience (rough translation: United Rhythms) participants discover, share, and celebrate the historical, political, and social connections of African dances. It is full-bodied, globally inspired, historically based, and fun for various ages and abilities.
We are available to facilitate community dance classes and workshops, gallery performances, full-length concert work, and a variety of dance-related events.
