Chamber Energy Solutions Winter Natural Gas Update

Chamber Energy Solutions Winter Natural Gas Update
Periodically CES will provide updates on the natural gas or electric environment.  Today we are focusing on the natural gas market. This information pertains to the commodity portion of the bill not Columbia Gas or Dominion charges.
Although mild at times, this winter has been colder than last year’s winter and natural gas prices have reflected that change. Market prices for December ($3.70), January ($3.35) and February ($3.23) this year were approximately 13% higher than the settlements from last year. The current pricing for March is approximately 40% higher than the market settlement for March of last year.  The current price of $3.41 is subject to change before the market settles and mixed weather reports, combined with weak withdrawals from gas in storage, will create more opportunities for the March price to fall. Remember, even if the price does fall, it will still be higher than the price you paid last year.

Charitable Contributions

Tom Friedel,CPA-OWNER Padgett Business Services

Charitable Contributions Require Adequate Substantiation

Contributions of more than $250 to churches or other charities must meet the IRS substantiation requirements. It is inadequate to use copies of cancelled checks alone. Proper substantiation must be provided in writing by the charitable entity before the deduction can be taken. The written acknowledgement must state whether or not the taxpayer received any goods or services in return for the contribution. A recent tax court case has shown the hard line stance which the IRS is taking on this issue (TC Memo 2012-140, Durden and Durden vs. Commissioner of Internal Revenue).

Social Media Crisis Response Plan

Bob Keogh, Diversified Insurance

Social Media Crisis Reponse Plan

Social media is the way of the world. Well over one billion people worldwide use at least one form of social media on a daily basis, and that number keeps increasing. Most businesses have followed suit, realizing that social media is a useful way to build a brand and reach customers where they are—online.
It’s easy to interact with customers via social media if your company has a positive image. But what if one of your employees posts a customer’s private information on Twitter or uploads a video to YouTube of another employee smoking marijuana in the break room? You could be dealing with a social media nightmare. Without the proper crisis response plan in place, your countless hours spent increasing brand awareness and goodwill could evaporate. Use the following tips to help create a crisis response plan of your own.
