Whitehouse Chamber & COSE Present Small Business Convention
-Largest event targeting small businesses in Midwest!

The Whitehouse Area Chamber of Commerce and the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) are collaborating on the 2013 Small Business Convention— the largest event specifically designed for small businesses in the entire Midwest.  The Convention will be held on October 23, 24 and 25 at Kalahari Resorts and Convention Center in Sandusky.
The event will bring together more than 1,000 small business professionals for three days of opportunity to learn and connect at this one-of-a-kind event.  The event will feature six inspiring national keynote speakers, more than 50 idea-sparking educational breakout workshops, an 80-exhibit trade show, and plenty of structured and unstructured networking opportunities.
The final judging in the third annual COSE Business Pitch Competition will serve as the kick-off to the Convention on Wednesday night (Oct. 23) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kalahari.  The final four contestants will be vying for $40,000 in prize money and making presentations to a panel of judges that will include Jeff Hoffman, CEO and co-founder of the Priceline.com family of companies.
This year’s Convention is truly a collaborative effort as COSE has partnered with more than 30 chambers of commerce and business support organizations across Ohio and the Midwest to produce the event.  Members of the Whitehouse Area Chamber can register for the Convention for just $99 versus the non-member rate of $249.  Kalahari is also offering attendees a special hotel room rate of just $109 per night for those choosing to stay over.

Life Goes On Despite Partial Government Shutdown

Matt Padgett, II- Edward Jones

Life Goes On Despite Partial Government Shutdown

Even with a flurry of last-minute negotiations to avoid a U.S. government shutdown, no agreement was reached, and a partial shutdown began on Oct 1. Essential services will continue, including Social Security and Medicare payments as well as many others.

No one can know how long this partial shutdown will last or the full impact, which will likely grow in proportion to its length. The pain is greatest for furloughed government workers and those whose activities are tied to national parks and other government services. But most people will continue their daily routines without any disruption. And that's why we believe that the impact on the economy and the financial markets is likely to be small.
Small Market Impact of Past Shutdowns
While you might think shutting down the U.S. government, especially with all the associated uncertainty, would trigger a market decline, that hasn't always been the case:
There have been 17 government shutdowns in the past, most recently in 1996.
Stocks dropped during nine of them and rose during the other eight.
After the shutdowns ended, the average stock market gain was 2.5% over the following three months and 13.3% over the following 12 months.*
That's one reason we think you should stay invested and consider any short-term decline as an opportunity to add quality investments at lower prices.
Don't Be Distracted by the Policy Drama
It's concerning that our leaders in Washington are unable to reach agreement on a budget to keep the federal government operating. But they did reach a last-minute agreement to continue paying the military. And we think they'll also reach a last-minute agreement to raise the debt ceiling later this month, avoiding more severe consequences. In the meantime, you'll need patience, discipline and common sense to keep these policy dramas in perspective and continue with your life and long-term financial strategy as usual.

Sincerely,
Matt Padgett II
