Wing and Warriors is a non-profit corporation 501(c)3 located in Florissant, Colorado (38 miles west of Colorado Springs). We are lifelong Colorado residents and specialize in raising and training Search and Rescue bloodhounds. We Currently have 22 SAR dogs in the field throughout the nation located in Police, Sheriff, and Fire Departments.
We have been dog lovers and trainers for over 25 years.
We train dogs (certain breeds that fill the need) adopted from shelters or rescue groups. By doing this, the service dog gets a chance at a new productive life filled with love and purpose.
When we learned of the plight of the returning servicemen, we felt that training service dogs was something we had to do! That's when Wings and Warriors was born.
Recently, we learned that suicide rates of military veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq had reached alarming rates. Twenty-two vets commit suicide each day! At that moment we wanted to help in any way that we could. Returning veterans are often devastated physically, mentally and emotionally. They return with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Many have emotional problems and have difficulty coping with the return home. The government reports that approximately 11 – 20% of returning vets suffer from PTSD or TBI.
Wings-and-Warriors will take dogs from shelters, match with veterans, and train them together. The training takes 7 months to 2 years to complete but will last a lifetime. The mission is to "save lives one step at a time".
Nationally, the demand for a service dog is much higher than the supply. There are many facilities located around the country; however a small percentage is accredited with Assistance Dogs International (ADI). Only 58 organizations have this accreditation. Wings-and Warriors goal will be to attain this honor.
