About Us
WANTED: Young, skinny wiry fellows. Not over 18. Must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred. The Sam Machette Station, built originally as a ranch house and fur trading station, was pressed into a Pony Express relay station in 1860. The structure was moved into Gothenburg in 1931 and is now open April-October to the public as a museum and gift shop.
Gothenburg is the Pony Express Capitol of Nebraska and is historically located in the first transcontinental highway to the west. While you are visiting the Pony Express Station, you can also learn about the Oregon Trail, Overland trail and the routes of the Mormons.
The station is located in a lovely Arboretum park setting, with rest room facilities, playground equipment and a shaded picnic area for travelers.
Admission to the museum is FREE!
