Harlan is located in southwest Iowa, approximately 11 miles north of Interstate 80 between Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska at the junction of US Highways 59 and 44. We have a great little community here in Harlan, also known as the City of Trees. With 17 area churches, a melting pot of cultures, and a history dating back to 1838, Harlan is a friendly, progressive community of 5,400 people, providing a high quality of life with an abundance of recreational and cultural activities.
Harlan has one of the state's finest volunteer fire departments and one of the lowest crime rates in Iowa for cities between 5,000 and 10,000 population. The city is blessed with a strong street, utility and park infrastructure as well.
Located in West Central Iowa, Harlan is the seat of Shelby County government and a short drive on Interstate 80 from Omaha, NE and Des Moines, IA.
Shelby County's rural tranquility is scattered with timber-bordered, green rolling pastures dotted with sparkling ponds, grazing livestock and fields of corn and soybeans. Fresh air sustains the 1,200 farms, all of which offer the perfect urban-rural setting
The population is not only well educated, but its rural roots are evidenced in a strong dedication to the traditional American ethic of helping others. The library, two historical museums, parks, park shelters, and recreational equipment were developed through countless volunteer hours. Over 60 civic organizations have helped Harlan grow and prosper. We would like you to be a part of this growth
