Tibbits Classic Film Series will present a double feature of Magical Musicals, with showings of “The Band Wagon” and “Funny Face” February 12.
The Band Wagon, 1953 – 1h 52m (begins at 4pm)
With his Hollywood movie career coming to an end, one-time Broadway star Troy Hunter (Fred Astaire) returns to New York at the behest of his friends Lily and Lester Marton (Nanette Fabray, Oscar Levant) to star in their new Broadway musical. The Martons have already settled on director Jeffrey Cordova (Jack Buchman), which is the beginning of their problems. Cordova has never directed a musical and from the beginning sees the play as being a work of art with grand themes. Needless to say, it doesn’t fair well in previews and it’s left to Troy to save the show.
Funny Face, 1957 –PG, 1h 43m (begins at 6pm)
In need of a suitable setting for his latest shoot, fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) requests the use of a bookstore for the day. When the photo session is over, the store is left in a shambles, much to salesgirl Jo Stockton’s (Audrey Hepburn) dismay. Later, Avery examines the photos taken there and is intrigued by Jo’s unique appearance, as is his editor at a leading fashion magazine. They offer Jo a modeling contract, which she reluctantly accepts only because it includes a trip to Paris. Eventually, her attitude toward the job softens, and Jo begins to enjoy the work and the company of her handsome photographer.
