Better Choices, Better Health helps adults of all ages and caregivers manage the symptoms of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, depression, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and any other physical and mental health conditions. This evidence-based program, developed by Stanford University, is held weekly for six weeks at Avera Holy Family Hospital from 1-3 pm on Thursdays in the Cardiac Rehab area beginning April 7th.
The workshop sessions are taught by trained leaders Kari Sorenson and Tina Bauermeister; they have worked with chronic conditions for many years. This creates an environment of mutual support, which builds participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and lead active lives.
Workshop Topics Include:
· Techniques to deal with isolation, frustration, fatigue, and pain
· Suitable exercises for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance
· Appropriate use of medications
· How to communicate effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
· Healthy eating and nutrition tips
· How to evaluate treatment options
· Creating action plans
