About Us
Horses Unlimited, Inc. (HUI) is a non profit corporation founded in the fall of 1993. We are located in Graeagle, California in the northern Sierra Nevada mountains of Plumas County. HUI is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Int.) riding center and its instructors are PATH certified. HUI's mission is to provide equine therapy (activities) to the disabled and special needs population of Plumas County and adjacent parts of Lassen and Sierra Counties. We operate a riding center where people with special needs can pursue individual goals and interact with the local community.Student riders range in age from two to over fifty years of age. Some of their disabilities include multiple sclerosis, developmental disabilities, hearing and vision impairments and acquired brain injuries. The riding program is designed to give each rider the opportunity to expand the limits of their abilities in a safe environment.
Therapeutic horseback riding offers physical, emotional and mental rewards to individuals with disabilities. Research shows that horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves bodies in a manner similar to a human walking gait. Riders with impaired mobility can experience increased balance, muscle control and strength.
Individuals with learning or developmental disabilities are motivated by riding to increase concentration, patience and discipline. The unique relationship formed with a horse can help improve interpersonal relationships, increase self-esteem and improve skills.
Since our founding, a core of dedicated, trained volunteers and others in the community have created an environment of safety and personal triumph for people with special needs. These volunteers served eighteen riders during 1994, the first year of operation.
